DARWIN CAÑETE – The deputy prosecutor believes that ABS-CBN news anchor Tony Velasquez is one of the reasons why the Kapamilya network should not be given a franchise again.

Earlier, Velasquez criticized President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. over his “Hokkaido” joke.

His joke was in response to speculations that he went to Japan amid the devastation of Severe Tropical Storm Paeng over the weekend.

The Palace had already denied that the president was in Japan. However, it did not specify Marcos’ location.

Deputy Prosecutor Darwin Cañete has given his opinion on the remark of Tony Velasquez.

According to him, his statement is a reminder that ABS-CBN is full of anti-Marcos personalities, which is why PBBM should not grant the Kapamilya network another franchise.

The post of Tony Velasquez from ABS CBN should serve as a reminder that the network is riddled, perhaps is composed mostly of anti-Marcos personalities. A franchise, should never ever be allowed to return directly or indirectly to ABS CBN. In fact, any blocktiming agreements of the former channel should be reviewed.. let them rot. Let Rep. Marcoleta have at them,” the lawyer said according to dailybncnews.com.

Meanwhile, it was on May 5, 2020, when the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and Solicitor General Jose Calida issued a cease-and-desist order to ABS-CBN.

On July 10, 2020, members of the House of Representatives, particularly the Committee on Legislative Franchises, voted 70–11 to deny the franchise application of ABS-CBN, citing several issues with the network’s franchise.

Following the closure of the Kapamilya Network, a lot of ABS-CBN employees lost their jobs. Some workers decided to transfer to other networks.
