It was on Monday when PBBM signed the Republic Act No. 11934 or SIM Card Registration Act which aims to combat the spread of text scams in the country.

A system for the sale and registration of SIM (subscriber identification module) cards will be established under the new measure.

Prepaid SIM card holders have 180 days from the date the law goes into effect to register and verify their phone numbers with their respective public telecommunications entities (PTE).

A valid written request to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) can result in a 120-day extension.

Ine of the new law’s authors is Senator Win Gatchalian and he believes the six-month period will allow existing users to register their cards.

Users will be asked to fill out a form with their information and present a copy of a valid government ID with a photo during registration. Failure to comply will result in the deactivation of the SIM card.
