NTC Orders Telecommunications Companies Anew To Warn Public Against “Personalized” Text Scams

The NTC has issued a similar order on the “personalized” text scams in late August.

NTC — The National Telecommunications Commission ordered telecommunications companies anew to warn the public against the proliferation of “personalized” text scams.

To recall, NTC issued a similar order on the “personalized” text scams or unsolicited text messages containing the names of intended recipients in late August. Similar orders on the proliferation of spam text messages were also issued last May, June, and July.

The NTC, in a memorandum dated September 8, 2022, ordered Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, and DITO Telecommunity to blast to their subscribers daily from September 9-15 the following message:

BABALA. HUWAG PONG MANIWALA SA TEXT NA NAGLALAMAN NG INYONG PANGALAN NA NAG-AALOK NG TRABAHO, PABUYA O PERA. ITO PO AY ISANG SCAM.

The National Telecommunications Commission, in issuing the latest order, said that the proliferation of “personalized” fake job, bonus cash, lucky winner, and other similar money scams targeting the public has continued across the telecommunications networks in the Philippines in the month of September.

The telcos were given until September 19 to submit written reports of their compliance to the National Telecommunications Commission.

Also, the telecommunications companies were ordered to accelerate the process of blocking SIM (subscriber identity module) cards that are being utilized in order to perpetrate the fraudulent activities.

The National Telecommunications Commission, in a separate memorandum, ordered its regional directors and officers-in-charge to appear before local television and radio stations within their respective jurisdictions at least 10 days to warn the general public against the continuing text scams from September 9-15, 2022.

Also, the NTC ordered its regional directors and officers-in-charge to expand their respective local public information campaigns in order to educate the general public of the scam text messages.

The NTC regional directors and officers-in-charge were given until September 19 to submit their compliance reports to the National Telecommunications Commission.
