To recall, the Commission said on Thursday that the information being used by text scammers may have been sourced from harvested or scrapped data from messaging applications and online payments.

In an organizational meeting of the Senate Committee On Public Services, NPC Deputy Commissioner Leandro Aguirre told senators an initial probe of the Commission indicated that there’s no breach of the data of several mobile applications.

Privacy Commissioner John Henry D. Naga said that as personalized text scams continue to rise in the country, the Commission vowed to protect the data of Filipinos.

According to Naga, the Commission will relentlessly protect the Filipino against any unscrupulous attempt to take advantage of personal data.

Naga also urged the full cooperation of all stakeholders involved — including their partners in the government, the telecommunications companies, and the general public — to bring the matter to a full conclusion.

ABS-CBN News reported that another meeting has been set on September 13 with telco operators and concerned government agencies to discuss the matter — including the Philippine National Police (PNP), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center.

This is an ongoing investigation that involves close coordination between telecommunication companies and government authorities such as the National Telecommunications Commission,” Naga said.

DICT Secretary Ivan John Uy, meanwhile, said the speedy roll out of the National ID System or PhilSys will be vital to the success of SIM card registration.
