Atty. Michael Poa, the spokesperson of the education department announced it on Thursday, September 1.

Through its Memorandum 76, the DepEd has reminded the schools that the hiring of teachers is ongoing. The vacancies which will be filled up will give an adequate workforce.

“Gusto lang natin paalalahanan ang ating mga paaralan na to fill up na ‘yung ating mga teaching positions. Kung ilan ‘yung planong i-hire, next year we are planning – at least as far as the budget is concerned –we are planning to hire 10,000 teachers,” he said.

“As to yung sa kailangan, I don’t have the exact figures right now but next year definitely, we aim to hire 10,000 teachers,” he added.

Poa added that DepEd is determined and confident to complete the planned classroom construction, stating that any delays in 2021 were caused by COVID-19 lockdowns.

But for 2023, he claimed that DepEd is sure in completing the intended classrooms because there are already precise engineering drawings in place.

He also mentioned President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s proclamation that there won’t be any more pandemic-related lockdowns.

Meanwhile, the education department has asked for a P86.5-billion budget for 2023 to address the shortage in classrooms.

According to Undersecretary Anne Sevilla, the proposed budget could build 34,552 schools in first to sixth-class level municipalities.

However, last August 26, the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) admitted that the government does not have enough funds.

DepEd is currently headed by Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio.
