Vivian Velez: “The next DG will surely have his work cut out for him, or her.”
VIVIAN VELEZ — The actress recently announced that she has resigned from her position as director general of the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP).
Vivian revealed through a statement posted on the organization’s official Facebook page that she’s no longer being part of the Film Academy of the Philippines, saying that she tendered her “irrevocable resignation” last May.
The actress then thanked the Board of Directors of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) for providing her the opportunity to serve as FAP Director General.
“It was a very challenging stint, to say the least, and the pandemic did not make it any easier, either,” Vivian said.
Recently, the Film Academy of the Philippines drew criticism from different industry groups for its non-submission of the country’s official entry to the Academy Awards for the foreign film category last December 2021.
At that time, the Film Academy of the Philippines cited a lack of funds because of the coronavirus pandemic as the reason for not being able to start the process of selecting an entry.

“It has no credible source of income, or, government support to make ends meet. The next DG will surely have his work cut out for him, or her,” Vivian said.
According to her, FAP treasurer Manny Morfe will be the acting officer-in-charge of the organization while the board of the Cultural Center of the Philippines deliberates on the appointment of a new director general.
Meanwhile, actor Tirso Cruz III has been appointed as Chairman and CEO of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).
