“Poverty is not a hindrance to success.”

It is an old proverb that tells us that one can achieve his/her dreams in life no matter what; whether being poor or not coming from a well-off family or having a low economic status.

Indeed, poverty did not hinder a certain Jonell Calisin, 31, who graduated Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture at Bulacan State University.

His graduation ceremony took place at the Philippine Arena, Ciudad de Victoria, Santa Maria, Bulacan.

Due to extreme hardship and other trials, it took him eight and a half years before he completed what should have been only a five-year course.

His father Mang Arnelo works as a welder in a tent factory while his mother Aling Corazon is a seamstress.

In an interview with PEP.ph, he shared the struggles he had before graduating from college.

According to him, he once worked as a merchandiser and factory worker in different companies in order to earn money and finish his studies.

This, was after he stopped his schooling when he lost his job during his second year in college.

When he returned to study, he suffered from failing grades.

He almost quit but he persevered to reach his goal, to finish architecture.

Despite his hardships in life, Jonell Calisin did not surrender.

Jonell believes that after graduating, he will slowly achieve his dreams for himself and for his family.

It was on July 16 when first posted on Facebook his story. It made rounds online and caught the attention of netizens.
