Here’s the message of the incoming BIR chief to President-elect Bongbong Marcos about paying taxes

LILIA GUILLERMO – The incoming chief of the Bureau of Internal Revenue said that she would ask President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to be a “role model” in paying taxes.

This was in connection with the more than P203-billion tax liabilities of the Marcos family as a per a ruling in 1994.

In an interview, the incoming BIR chief was asked about the issue and according to her, she need to check the documents first about the tax liabilities of the Marcoses.

She also stressed that it’s not Bongbong Marcos who will pay for the amount but the estate.

“‘Puwede ho ba maging role model kayo?’ ‘Yun ang magiging ano eh. The Marcoses will now pay their taxes because nag-comply sa batas,” she said.

According to Guillermo, the information about the tax liabilities of the Marcoses coming from the Supreme Court were final at the same time executory.

Guillermo, the current assistant governor of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, who was named as the next BIR chief, said she and Marcos have yet to discuss the matter.

She’s hoping to see the documents on Monday next week during the turnover of the outgoing BIR chief.

The camp of Marcos Jr. has yet to issue any statement regarding the remarks of the incoming BIR chief.

In 1997, the Supreme Court ordered the Marcos family to pay P27-B which has now reached P203-B due to interest and penalties.

BBM’s camp doubted that the Marcoses have to pay P203-B because the properties in question in the said estate tax are still being processed by the court until now.
