Jojo Binay Speaks On Domingo’s Decision To Resign As FDA Chief

Former Vice President Jojo Binay: “The wrong person resigned.”

JOJO BINAY — Here’s what the former Vice President said about Eric Domingo’s decision to resign as director-general of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

President Rodrigo Duterte appointed Domingo as director-general of the Food and Drug Administration in February 2020. Domingo previously served as officer-in-charge following the dismissal of then FDA head Nela Charade Puno.

On Monday, the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed the resignation of FDA chief Eric Domingo from his post effective January 3. The DOH assigned FDA Deputy Director General, Dr. Oscar Gutierrez, as the officer-in-charge.

Domingo said in a text message to a news outlet that he’s resigning as he already did his part during the pandemic.

The FDA is now stronger, more efficient and systems are in place. It’s time for me to move on to other things,” Domingo said.

Following Domingo’s sudden resignation, former Vice President Jejomar “Jojo” Binay said in a tweet that he’s demanding the resignation of Health Secretary Francisco Duque III over the bungled government response to the pandemic.

The wrong person resigned,” Binay tweeted. “It should have been the Health Secretary for his mismanagement of the medical response to the pandemic.

In a statement obtained by Manila Bulletin, Binay said that Duque’s failings have unduly compromised the safety of health workers and other frontliners, and “eroded the chances of an early economic recovery”.

Binay also said that if the government wanted the economy to recover, the solution was to improve the country’s medical response to the pandemic, especially amidst the growing threats of the Omicron and Delta variants.

That will never happen under the present Department of Health (DOH) leadership. We need a competent person leading the department,” Binay said.
