President Duterte Tells Leyteños To Pray Directly To God And Not Through Priests

President Duterte to Leyteños: “Ayaw mo’g ampo sa pari, diretso mo sa Ginoo”

PRESIDENT DUTERTE — The Philippine President said he would pray that Leyte would be spared from another devastating typhoon, but he asked its people to do the same but this time, directly to God and not through priests.

The President made the statement during his visit to Maasin City in Leyte last December 18, following the onslaught of typhoon “Odette” there late last week.

President Duterte expressed his sympathies to the victims of the typhoon during a situation briefing in Maasin City and assured the people there that he’ll be praying that this will not happen again.

According to the President, it might be more effective if the people of Leyte will pray as well but this time, directly to God.

Maybe when you Leyteños pray, you pray to the priest. Don’t pray to the priest, pray directly to God,” President Duterte said in Bisaya. “Why do you believe in those priests? You pray directly to God even if you are in the church. Pray hard because we really need a good — to fight the calamities there.

Meanwhile, the President asked the local chief executives of the areas ravaged by typhoon “Odette” to give the government more time to come up with the funds to help them return to normal. According to him, he already called for a meeting in order to resolve this issue.

The President explained to the local leaders that it will take some time due to the number of paperwork they have to accomplish.

He also said that he’ll need to cut the budget of all the appropriations available, especially those that weren’t being used or the projects that weren’t doing so well.
