President Duterte to Nograles: “Kung maaari, ikaw na lang sana ang acting na muna until we find a replacement.”
PRESIDENT RODRIGO DUTERTE – The Philippine President named Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles as acting Presidential Spokesperson following Harry Roque’s departure from Malacañang.
On Monday evening, President Duterte ordered Nograles to take over Harry Roque’s role for the time being as Roque will be running for senator in the 2022 elections.
The President explained that a government official will automatically be out of the government once he/she filed his/her certificate of candidacy (COC).
“No other formal ritual is needed except that when you file, tapos ka. At that moment, you cease to be a government employee,” President Duterte said in his pre-recorded public address. “Kung maaari, ikaw (Nograles) na lang sana ang acting na muna until we find a replacement. I do not want to burden you with so much… alam ko yung paper works dadaan sa iyo.”

President Duterte’s announcement came after Roque filed his certificate of candidacy for senator in the 2022 elections on Monday, effectively vacating the position of the spokesperson of the President and the government’s pandemic task force.
Nograles was speaking on behalf of the government regarding its pandemic response at the start of the pandemic.
At that time, Nograles used to hold almost daily press briefings until Harry Roque returned as Presidential Spokesperson, also replacing then Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo as President Duterte’s mouthpiece.
Roque held his last press briefing on Monday noon wherein he explained his decision to run for senator in the 2022 elections. According to him, he will leave his office in a better condition than when he first assumed the position.
“Kung inyong matatandaan, bumalik naman po ako bilang spox sa gitna ng pandemya noong isang taon para magbigay linaw sa panahon ng kalituhan,” Roque said. “Masaya akong mission accomplished na po tayo, ha? Iiwan ko ang trabaho ko na mas mabuti kumpara sa ating nadatnan.”
