Cayetano wished the best for the President should the latter join the senatorial race in the 2022 elections.

Whatever his (Duterte) decision is, I wish him the best,” he told journalists at the Quezon Convention Center in Lucena City on Saturday noontime.

But Cayetano hinted that he preferred President Duterte to just follow the footsteps of former President Fidel Ramos and become an “elder statesman”. According to him, he didn’t doubt President Duterte will continue to be influential in the days to come.

Inquirer reported that Cayetano attended the assembly of the Alliance of Servants of Christ, an association of Christian religious pastors in the province.

Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi declared last month that they’re convincing President Duterte to run for senator in the 2022 elections.

The Cusi-led PDP-Laban originally wanted the President to run for vice president with Senator Bong Go as president. However, President Duterte announced his intention to retire from politics.

Senator Bong Go announced last November 2 that President Duterte hasn’t ruled out the possibility of seeking a Senate seat in the 2022 elections. Malacañang then confirmed on Friday that the President was “considering” his allies’ calls for him to run for senator in next year’s polls.

Cayetano ran in the 2016 elections as President Duterte’s running mate and later served as speaker of the House of Representatives in 2019 following his loss in the vice-presidential race.

He previously said that he’s considering to running for president in the 2022 elections but eventually declared that he will run for senator as an independent candidate instead.
