With the sudden demise of the diminutive comedienne Mahal, her contribution to the world of television and film has surfaced on social media.
Mahal started appearing on television in the early 1990s. One of Mahal’s first projects was the noontime show Lunch Date on GMA-7.
But other than that, Mahal is said to have portrayed an iconic role in a movie.
According to her IMDb page, she is said to be behind the alien character Kokey in its 1997 film adaptation.
Kokey is a children’s film starring the then-young Carlo Aquino. To play the role, the actor had to wear a costume.
On Facebook, a post courtesy of a netizen named Jaypee Ramos has gone viral.
He asked his followers: “Mga batang 90’s, alam mo bang si Mahal ang gumanap bilang Kokey na hit movie noong 1997?”
Attached to the photo is a screenshot of the credits where Mahal is credited for playing Kokey’s character.
The post already has 17k likes.
With the post getting viral, netizens are having a debate in the comments section on whether Mahal really portrayed Kokey.
Many are posting screenshots from Wikipedia with different names appearing to play Kokey in the film.
To end the debate, Carlo Aquino was asked by PEP.ph about it and he immediately confirmed Mahal’s appearance on the film.
The sad thing is, Mahal did not have an interview about her performance with Kokey and she can no longer be asked what was her experience in playing the character.
Mahal, 46, passed away on August 31, 2021, due to COVID-19 and gastro illness.
