In his remarks, the President praised Tugade for being one of the national government’s top performers. According to President Duterte, it would be unfortunate for the national government once Tugade stepped down from his post after June 2022.

I cannot express in words the appreciation of this government of your talent and expertise in running your department. You are one of the top performers. Sayang ang gobyernong ito pag nawala ka (Tugade), sa totoo lang. Tignan mo nagawa ni Secretary Tugade. More than the achievements of the past administrations, three administrations combined… If one really puts their heart to it, talagang kayang gawin,” he added.

President Duterte also said that the country “badly needs” someone like Tugade who supposedly finished projects that usually end up in corruption.

The President then said that he hoped Tugade will complete his project and will consider running for Senator in 2022 elections as well.

In response, Tugade said that he’s “happy and humbled” by President Duterte’s generous remarks, to which the President replied that he’s speaking from his heart.

My comments come from the heart. You know me. I do not go for pretensions. Talagang mahusay ka. Hindi ako nagkamali. Mahusay ka kaya kinuha kita. So it bore fruit. Ngayon, nakikita ko na na I made the right decision,” President Duterte said.

Meanwhile, President Duterte has yet to reveal his senatorial candidates for the upcoming 2022 elections.
