123rd PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE DAY — President Rodrigo Duterte on Saturday encouraged Filipinos to emulate heroes to beat COVID-19.

President Duterte made the statement in a video message aired on Saturday after the flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony held in celebration of the 123rd anniversary of Philippine independence in Manila’s Luneta Park (Rizal Park).

With their noble example, inspiring us we look forward to a brighter future filled with hope that we will overcome the challenges brought by this pandemic. May the patriotic fervor continue to burn in our hearts. Mabuhay ang malayang Pilipinas,” President Duterte said.

President Duterte was set to physically attend the commemoration of the Philippine independence this afternoon.

This will be President Duterte’s second time to be physically present in Independence Day rites since he assumed the presidency in 2016.

Apart from the Independence Day program in Rizal Park, simultaneous flag raising and wreath-laying ceremonies were also held at the following historical sites and shrines in the country:

  • Rizal Park in Davao City;
  • Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite;
  • Museo ng Katipunan at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City;
  • Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan;
  • Bonifacio National Monument in Caloocan City;
  • Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revoluccion at the Manila North Cemetery in Manila;
  • Museo ng Kasaysayang Panlipunan ng Pilipinas in Angeles, Pampanga;
  • Plaza Independencia in Cebu City; and
  • Liberty Shrine in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu

Meanwhile, United States President Joe Biden greeted the Philippines on Independence Day and also called for continued joint efforts amidst regional tensions and the coronavirus pandemic as well.
