In a report on ABS-CBN News, China was poised to ease its border restrictions to allow some foreigners back in, provided, that they had taken a Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccine.

China had been closed to most foreigners since last March in order to stem the spread of coronavirus disease, which it had largely brought under control at home, stranding many foreigners with family and jobs inside China overseas.

However, Chinese embassies in different countries had issued notices saying that China would open visa applications to selected people who had taken a China-made COVID-19 vaccine.

On Monday, the Chinese Embassy in the United States said in a statement that it would start to process visa applicants vaccinated with China-made COVID-19 vaccines.

This would apply to those visiting the Chinese mainland for business travel, work resumption, or for “humanitarian needs” such as reuniting with family members from this week.

Beijing was driving forward its vaccination plan for its vast domestic population with four domestically produced COVID-19 vaccines approved so far. However, it had yet to approve any foreign-made COVID-19 vaccines.

China had also shipped its COVID-19 vaccines overseas as it worked to blunt foreign criticism of the initial spread of the coronavirus from its shores.

The embassy statement said that this applied to those who either had two doses of China-made COVID-19 vaccine or a single-dose at least 14 days before applying for the visa.

Chinese embassies in other countries including the Philippines, India, Italy, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka had published similar statements.
