Comelec didn’t see a need to postpone the 2022 elections amid pandemic, according to its spokesperson.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) didn’t see a need to postpone the May 2022 elections amid pandemic, according to its spokesperson.

This, as Director James Jimenez on Friday said in an interview on GMA Network’s Dobol B sa News TV that the Commission didn’t see the need for the postponement of May 2022 elections as it cannot be changed immediately.

Jimenez’s statement came after Deputy Majority Leader Mikey Arroyo asked Comelec officials present at a budget hearing at the House of Representatives last Thursday to consider postponing the May 2022 elections because of health and safety concerns amid the pandemic.

The Constitution mandated that National Elections be held every second Monday of May every three years.

Former Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal had earlier mentioned that postponing the May 2022 elections due to COVID-19 pandemic had no basis, noting that other countries had managed or planned to hold elections even amid the pandemic.

Jimenez also said in an interview that the pandemic had been the “basis” of the Comelec’s preparations – which was already ongoing – for the May 2022 elections.

Meanwhile, Comelec earlier announced that overseas voter registration resumed last September 1, 2020.
