The FBI and the US NSA said that Russia’s “Main Intelligence Directorate” — also known as the “GRU” — was using a hacking tool with a code name “Drovorub” in order to break into Linux-based computers.

To recall, Linux was an operating system — just like Windows OS and macOS — that was commonly used across computer server infrastructure.

According to a former Western intelligence official, the public call-out was “unique” just because of the direct attribution that was offered by the US agencies. The FBI and the US NSA connected “Drovorub” into a specific Russian intelligence team — the “85th Main Special Service Center (GTsSS)”, military unit 26165.

Steve Grobman, the chief technology officer for McAfee, described “Drovorub” as a “‘Swiss Army knife’ of capabilities” that allowed the attacker to perform a lot of various functions — including stealing files and also remote-controlling the victim’s computer.
