Perrance Shiri, the agriculture minister in Zimbabwe, died at the age of 65.

Perrance Shiri, a 65-year-old agriculture minister in Zimbabwe who was also a retired general, died on Wednesday. The tragic news about his death was confirmed by Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

This, as two government sources told Reuters that Shiri was admitted to hospital last Tuesday, adding that he died in the “early hours of Wednesday”.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, the President of Zimbabwe, said in a statement that Shiri was described as a “true patriot” who devoted his life to the “liberation”, “independence”, and “service” of his country. However, Mnangagwa didn’t describe how Shiri died.

Yet based on a report on Reuters, domestic media said that Shiri’s cause of death was “complications from the respiratory disease” due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19). As per the report, Zimbabwe reported 2,817 cases of coronavirus disease and 40 fatalities.

Moreover, Zimbabwe’s agriculture minister – who was a retired general – helped plot the ouster of former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe in a 2017 takeover.
