Kenya on Tuesday officially declared that primary and secondary pupils will return to their respective classes on January 2021.
This, as Kenya officially announced that its academic year was considered “lost” due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
In a statement from George Magoha, the Education Minister in Kenya, he said that the curve of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) infections was expected to flatten “only by December”, as such, no primary and secondary school examinations would be held and the 2020 school calendar year would be considered “lost” due to coronavirus restrictions.
Mahona also said that the stakeholders had resolved to “reopen all basic education learning institutions” in the country in January 2021, adding that the decision was based on the assumption that the coronavirus infection curve would have flattened by December 2020.
As per Magoha’s statement, the decisions would apply to “all children”, specifying that the decisions may include schools that were offering international curriculum.

Kenya closed its schools last March 15 when the country had only three confirmed cases of coronavirus disease, which was one of the country’s health measures taken that month in order to combat the spread of coronavirus disease 2019.
On Monday, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta announced the country “phased reopening”, with international flights continuing on August 1 and lifting of its internal travel restrictions. Moreover, the curfew – which already set from 9:00 pm to 4:00 am – would remain in place.
