Senator Bato “physically” attends Senate session.
Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa made his first personal/physical appearance before a Senate hearing on Monday, June 1, after he was reprimanded for implying virtual conferences/meetings to the “good life.”
The 58-year-old former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief-turned-politician went to the senate in “flesh” as he delivers his sponsorship speech for a bill that aims to increase the number of women joining the country’s security force.
“Let us take the opportunity of the presence of Sen. Dela Rosa,” Senate President Vicente Sotto III told the other senators who were present in the session hall in Pasay City.
Last week, Sotto told the former law enforcer to physically attend the sessions following the latter’s statement with regards to his duty as a senator- while video conferencing, which he likened as a “good life”.
“What he meant was masarap ang buhay na magserbisyo sa bayan,” Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said before calling the former PNP chief to deliver his sponsorship speech.
“Pahirapan mo siya ngayon,” Sotto quipped as he tells Zubiri.
Meanwhile, Dela Rosa explained in a text message to ABS-CBN News that what prodded him to give such remark because according to him senate sessions were more effective when conducted through video meetings.
“Kaya nasabi kong ang sarap nang buhay kasi mas mabilis ang talakayan ng bills kapag naka-Webex kami at mas maaga matapos ang session. Sa tingin ko mas efficient ang session via Webex basta maganda lang ang wifi signal ng attendees,” said Dela Rosa.
Senators decided to shift from physical to online sessions in order to observe physical distancing as the country continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic.
