Authorities Explain Heavy Security in Taguig Demolition Operation
The Taguig Police have explained the presence of a sniper and SWAT team during a demolition operation in Barangay Palingon, Taguig City, saying it was part of standard safety procedures and not meant to intimidate residents.
The demolition took place on April 13, 2026, in the Panday Creekside area, where tensions escalated, resulting in injuries to several police officers and members of the demolition team. Some individuals were also arrested after reportedly throwing objects during the incident.
Authorities clarified that the deployment of specialized units, including a sniper, was intended to ensure the safety of everyone involved, including residents, workers, and law enforcement personnel. They emphasized that no civilians were targeted and that the main goal was to maintain order and prevent the situation from becoming more violent. The police maintained that their personnel acted professionally and focused on carrying out the operation in a peaceful and controlled manner.

However, the demolition drew strong criticism from advocacy groups. A regional alliance described the operation as excessive and forceful, pointing out the large number of personnel and equipment used compared to the relatively small number of families affected. According to the group, hundreds of police officers and demolition workers, along with heavy equipment, were deployed against a community of around 300 families. They also claimed that tear gas was used to disperse residents and that several individuals were arrested during the clearing operation.

Residents shared their distress online, expressing uncertainty about where they would go after losing their homes. Some said they had no relocation support and feared being forced to leave even temporary spaces. They also reflected on the community they had built over the years, describing it as a place filled with shared memories, relationships, and daily life that was suddenly taken away.
Authorities have stated that an investigation is ongoing to review the events surrounding the demolition.
