Google Launches New Features As Response To Coronavirus Disease

Google officially launched its new features in response to COVID-19 concerns.

Google officially launched its new features — the SOS alert search, the Information Panel of YouTube, and Hangouts Meet — in response to COVID-19 concerns.

This, as Google was doing its part in order to help provide information about the 2019 novel coronavirus or COVIID-19 to the public. Here are the new features that Google launched:

SOS ALERT ON SEARCH

Google

When you search for “coronavirus” or “COVID-19” on its search engine, the SOS Alert will appear in an instant. With SOS Alert, users can look for the latest developments regarding the 2019 novel coronavirus or COVID-19 from authoritative sources. Also, users will be able to see the list of top stories, links to helpful information, and safety tips from notable authoritative sources as well.

INFORMATION PANEL

When you search for “coronavirus” or “COVID-19” on YouTube, this will direct users to the World Health Organization (WHO) or other locally relevant authoritative organizations. As stated in the YouTube Help section, the information was translated into local languages and links to local sources — including health ministries and centers for disease control.

Google has also taken necessary measures in order to fight misinformation about coronavirus or COVID-19, including:

  • Removing content on YouTube that claims to prevent the 2019 novel coronavirus or COVID-19 instead of seeking medical treatment;
  • Blocking all ads on Google Ads that capitalize on the 2019 novel coronavirus or COVID-19;
  • Run PSA ads from WHO and government organizations; and
  • Prohibit developers on Google Play from capitalizing on sensitive events and prohibit apps that feature medical or health-related content or functionalities that are misleading or potentially harmful.

HANGOUTS MEET

Google officially announced free access to its advanced Hangouts Meet to all G Suite and G Suite for Education customers globally, including the Department of Education in the Philippines. This platform came as a response for employees, educators, and students who work and study remotely in order to limit the spread of the 2019 novel coronavirus or COVID-19.
