The “Village Plaza” will serve as a gathering place for competing athletes and their teams, as well as the venue wherein welcome ceremonies and press briefings will be held during the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The unusual structure of the “Village Plaza” was made mostly from wood – from floors, walls, and even the parts of the roof using timber including larch, Japanese cedar, and Japanese cypress. The immense complex agreed to both modern and traditional elements.

According to Nariki Makihara, Tokyo 2020 senior manager for venues sustainability, the “Village Plaza” was based on “Japanese traditional wood buildings,” yet not on any specific building in particular.

The unique features of the “Village Plaza” may include columns that were made by laying wooden planks at inclines against each other, and roof beams that were made by weaving planks into a latticework.

The woods that were used in making the “Village Plaza” has been donated by 63 municipalities across Japan. The said facility will be dismantled after the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
