LENI ROBREDO – The former vice president of the Republic of the Philippines is set to receive an honorary Doctor of Economics degree from Ateneo de Manila University.
Maria Leonor “Leni” Gerona Robredo served as the 14th vice president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022.
She was the wife of the late Jesse Robredo, who was the secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) from 2010 until his death in 2012.
In 2013, she ran for public office and was elected 2013 as the 3rd district representative of Camarines Sur.
She ran in the previous election as an independent candidate with her running mate, former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, but lost to President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Meanwhile, the ex-VP is set to receive an honorary Doctor of Economics degree from Ateneo de Manila University.
Commission on Higher Education (CHED) defines an honorary doctorate degree or honoris causa, the Latin translation for “for the sake of the honor,” as an “extraordinary academic degree” bestowed to individuals with “meritorious contributions” to a particular discipline.
According to Ateneo President Fr. Roberto Yap, the honorary degree is given to individuals who have achieved progress or advancement in their respective fields.
Ateneo recognized her responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, natural and man-made disasters, and violations against human rights and the Philippines’ national sovereignty.
The honorary doctorate degree will be given to her on August 27.
Robredo has yet to issue any statement on this matter.
