The FDA approved the compassionate use of China’s Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for PSG members.
Malacañang on Thursday said that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved the compassionate use of China’s Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for the benefit of the members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG).
Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said at a press briefing that the compassionate use would cover 10,000 doses.
A vaccine needed to secure an emergency use authorization (EUA) from the Food and Drug Administration for it to be legally administered in the Philippines.
However, the Food and Drug Administration can allow the use of the vaccine without an EUA approval provided that the said vaccine had secured a compassionate use permit.
China’s Sinopharm has yet to apply for an emergency use authorization before the Food and Drug Administration.

Prior to this, PSG commander Brigadier General Jesus Durante III said last December 2020 that some PSG members have already received COVID-19 vaccine doses that were donated to them as early as September or October 2020.
Durante made the admission after President Rodrigo Duterte claimed during a televised address that some members of the military already received COVID-19 vaccine doses supposedly manufactured by China’s Sinopharm.
FDA Director-General Eric Domingo said last January 27 that the probe on PSG members getting vaccinated with unregistered COVID-19 vaccine had hit a blank wall after their queries went unanswered by the Presidential Security Group.
