The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Johnson & Johnson said that annual vaccine shots may be needed for the next several years.
Alex Gorsky, the Chief Executive Officer of Johnson & Johnson, on Tuesday told CNBC in an interview that people may need to get vaccinated against the coronavirus disease annually over the next several years.
“Unfortunately, as (the virus) spreads it can also mutate. Every time it mutates, it’s almost like another click of the dial so to speak where we can see another variant, another mutation that can have an impact on its ability to fend off antibodies or to have a different kind of response not only to a therapeutic but also to a vaccine,” Gorsky said.

Johnson & Johnson said last week that the company asked health regulators in the United States to authorize its single-dose vaccine for emergency use, adding that the company would apply to European authorities in the coming weeks.
The drugmaker’s application to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) followed its January 29 report in which it said the COVID-19 vaccine had a 66% rate of preventing coronavirus infections in its large global trial.
Gorsky told CNBC that the company was “extremely confident” that it would meet its target to deliver 100 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to the United States by the end of June.
According to Gorsky, Johnson & Johnson was continuing work on a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine and the company expected two-shot vaccine data from human clinical trials in the second half of the year.
