Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said that he’s confident that COVID-19 vaccine supply would exceed needs by the end of 2021.
Albert Bourla, the chief executive officer (CEO) of Pfizer Inc, on Wednesday said that he’s confident that there would be more COVID-19 vaccine doses than required to fight the coronavirus pandemic by the end of 2021.
Bourla’s remarks came after Britain on Wednesday approved a COVID-19 vaccine jointly produced by BioNTech and Pfizer.
In a virtual conference hosted in Athens, Bourla said that he felt very comfortable that they’ll have more COVID-19 vaccine doses than they would need by the end of 2021, adding that they’re doing everything they could in order to increase the manufacturing capacity.
However, Bourla said that the challenge was that they need to increase its manufacturing capacity in the next few months.
The British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) granted an emergency use approval (EUA) 23 days after Pfizer published the first vaccine data from its final-stage clinical trial.
The said vaccine was due to be rolled out next week in Britain.
“As we anticipate further authorizations and approvals, we are focused on moving with the same level of urgency to safely supply a high-quality vaccine around the world,” said the UK government.

Meanwhile, United States and EU regulators were sifting through the same Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine trial data, but have yet to give their approval.
Bourla said that governments need to make sure that other measures were not relaxed in the meantime.
