PSC Chairman Calls Out Tab Baldwin Over Silence After Athlete Deaths

Tab Baldwin Faces Criticism From PSC Over Lack of Statement on Tragedy

PATRICK GREGORIO – The chairman of the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) has publicly criticized Ateneo men’s basketball coach Tab Baldwin for remaining silent following the tragic deaths of two student-athletes, Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia.

Gregorio questioned why Baldwin has not made any public statement or appearance since the incident, saying the matter goes beyond one school and has become a national concern. He emphasized that, out of respect for the families affected and the Filipino public, the coach should step forward and address the situation. He also pointed out that Baldwin has been living and coaching in the Philippines for about a decade, suggesting that he should better understand local values such as respect and empathy.

His remarks came after the Philippine Sports Commission gathered sports officials and stakeholders to review safety rules and existing policies in athletic programs, especially in light of recent tragedies involving student-athletes. The meeting aimed to identify possible gaps in current systems and improve protection for young players.

During a related press briefing, officials from the University Athletic Association of the Philippines stated that any possible disciplinary action involving Baldwin would only be decided after all investigations are completed. They stressed that decisions must be based on verified evidence and proper procedures, noting that it would be premature to issue penalties while facts are still being gathered. They also explained that discussions about preventive suspension depend on the school or institution involved, in this case Ateneo, since no active game suspension applies at the moment.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor and Employment reportedly called on Baldwin to present documentation regarding his foreign employment status in the country. Baldwin has been coaching the Ateneo Blue Eagles since 2016 and has led the team to four UAAP championships, including a recent title in 2022. He also signed a contract extension in 2025 that would keep him with the team for several more years.

As of now, Baldwin has not issued any public statement regarding the issue.
