Marcos Furious Over OFW Mistreatment in Bahrain

MWO Bahrain Employee Under Investigation for Alleged Abuse of OFWs

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed strong disappointment over the alleged mistreatment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Bahrain by an employee of the Migrant Workers Office (MWO).

A viral video showed the officer dismissing OFWs seeking financial assistance, telling them that aid had ended and that Manila would not provide additional funds. The clip sparked public concern and outrage online.

Palace Press Officer Atty. Claire Castro stated that the President was angered by the incident, emphasizing that public servants must not abuse their authority or disregard the welfare of Filipinos abroad. Marcos immediately instructed Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. The personnel involved were recalled to the home office while the administrative investigation continued.

“Hindi po pinalagpas ni Pangulong Marcos Jr. ang pangyayari sa pagitan ni MWO Bahrain employee at mga overseas Filipino workers doon,” Castro said. “Hindi po ito ikinatuwa ng Pangulo. Nagalit siya para sa ating mga OFWs dahil sa pagmamaltrato ng ilang public servant,” she added.

Castro reminded government employees that serving the public requires respect and care, and those unwilling to fulfill their duties properly should consider stepping down. Meanwhile, the Palace reiterated its commitment to protect and prioritize the welfare of OFWs, particularly in areas affected by rising tensions in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, repatriation efforts for OFWs wishing to return to the Philippines are already underway. Since March 3, about 400 workers and their dependents have been brought home. Additional flights are being arranged from Dubai, Riyadh, and other locations in Saudi Arabia, with departures planned starting March 14. The repatriation is funded through the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s Emergency Repatriation Fund. Castro also noted that arrangements for OFWs seeking to return from the United Arab Emirates are being finalized.
