Miss PH Earth Joy Barcoma Slams Corruption in Flood Control Projects

Miss PH Earth Joy Barcoma Speaks on Flood Control Scam

JOY BARCOMA – Miss Philippines Earth 2025 has joined the growing calls for accountability over the controversial government flood control projects.

The beauty queen from Bacoor City spoke out on social media, echoing the frustrations of many people who are upset about what is being called the “flood control scam.” On Friday, August 29, Barcoma reposted Senator Risa Hontiveros’ statement and stressed that someone must be held accountable for a scheme that has left Filipinos suffering not only from floods but also from corruption.

She admitted this was the first time she became so engaged in a social media trend. While she does not support online bullying, she said politicians and the privileged few who flaunt lavish lifestyles funded by corruption deserve the criticism they are receiving. Her comment came after viral posts showed people linked to government contractors displaying luxury items and taking expensive trips abroad.

Those posts angered many ordinary Filipinos, who continue to suffer from poor infrastructure and repeated flooding. Barcoma, who grew up with humble beginnings and earned her degree at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, said corruption forces people into unsafe and unjust situations. “They deserve to feel uncomfortable,” she wrote, stressing that public officials and the privileged few must be reminded of their responsibility to the people.

The reigning Miss Philippines Earth, who won over 35 other candidates during the national pageant in early August, will represent the country in the Miss Earth competition later this year. She ended her post with a strong message written in all caps: “SILA ANG DAPAT MAHIYA, HINDI TAYO. WE WILL HOLD THE LINE BY HOLDING THEM ACCOUNTABLE!”

Barcoma was not alone. A day earlier, 2021 Miss Intercontinental Cinderella Faye Obeñita also spoke out against the extravagant displays of wealth by personalities allegedly tied to the misuse of public funds, adding to the growing calls for transparency and justice.
