Al-ag Warns Davao May Lose Funds if the Dutertes Win

Will Davao Lose National Support? Al-ag Thinks So

BERNIE AL-AG – The vice mayoral candidate made a bold claim during a campaign rally in Davao City, stating that the city might not receive any funding from the national government if members of the Duterte family win in the upcoming local elections.

Al-Ag emphasized the urgent need for a flood control project in Davao City to help prevent future flooding. However, he acknowledged that the project would cost around ₱10 billion—a huge amount that would be difficult to raise without national government support. He warned voters that if the Dutertes win, this much-needed project might not push through as the national government could withhold funding.

“Kung sila ang manalo [Duterte] wala silang makukuhang budget sa national government,” Al-ag said.

He expressed confidence that if his party—referring to Davao City congressional candidate Migs Nograles and mayoral candidate Karlo Nograles—wins, the city would have better access to national funds and support for its infrastructure needs.

However, Al-ag’s remarks drew criticism from the public. Some netizens called his strategy inappropriate, accusing him of using fear and political pressure to sway voters.

One netizen, Giever Delyang, pointed out that Davao City has long proven its ability to thrive independently. He highlighted that as of December 2024, the city remained debt-free—a reflection of responsible and disciplined leadership. Delyang criticized Al-ag’s statements, saying that instead of presenting concrete plans and solutions, the campaign had focused too much on money matters, reducing public discussions to budget threats.

“So why, then, is the NATIONAL BUDGET being shamelessly politicized?” he asked. “Davaoenos are mere beggars waiting for scraps from the national table.” The issue has sparked debate, with many urging candidates to focus on clear platforms and meaningful solutions rather than relying on fear-based tactics.
