Cebu Couple Arrested for Selling 2-Week-Old Baby for P57K

Couple Arrested for Selling Their Baby in Cebu

CEBU – A couple was arrested for allegedly selling their two-week-old baby for more than P57,000. The shocking incident came to light when one of their children unknowingly mentioned the sale to a playmate, who later informed their mother. Concerned about the situation, the mother immediately reported it to the authorities, leading to the baby’s rescue and the couple’s arrest.

According to a report by GMA News, the Philippine National Police (PNP) is investigating whether this was the first time the couple committed such an act or if they had been involved in similar cases before. Officials discovered that the baby was the couple’s eighth child, raising concerns that they may have sold other children in the past.

After receiving the report, police officers quickly took action, ensuring the baby’s safety and taking the couple into custody. The couple now faces charges related to human trafficking and child exploitation. Meanwhile, social welfare workers have taken the rescued baby under their care to ensure its well-being.

Authorities continue their investigation and urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of child trafficking. They emphasize the importance of community awareness in protecting children from harm. The couple’s other children are now staying with relatives, who are under the supervision of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to ensure their safety.

In the Philippines, human trafficking and child exploitation are serious crimes that carry severe penalties. Under Republic Act No. 9208, also known as the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003, and its amendment, Republic Act No. 10364, those found guilty of selling or exploiting children face life imprisonment and fines ranging from P2 million to P5 million. Even attempted trafficking carries heavy consequences, including 10 to 15 years in prison and fines of up to P1 million.
