72-Year-Old Grandpa Still Works Despite Eye Problem to Help Family
SIPALAY CITY, NEGROS OCCIDENTAL – Despite his eye problem, a 72-year-old grandpa repairs watches to help his family.
In Barangay 2, Sipalay City, a senior citizen named Tatay Joli Buenvenido takes pride in his ability to repair watches, a skill he has honed over the past 35 years. His exceptional talent has become a source of support for his family, despite facing problems in his sight.
Buenvenido has a cataract, a condition in which the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy. People with cataracts experience clouded vision, comparable to looking through a frosty or fogged-up window, making it more challenging to see things clearly.
Tatay Joli, a father of seven with some of his children residing in Manila, has embraced a life filled with joy as he continues to live with his remaining family members. His household includes 12 grandchildren, and despite not having a spouse, he remains content and dedicated to providing for his loved ones.
For the past three and a half decades, the grandpa has been fixing broken watches, a craft he balances with his responsibilities as a farmer in the fields. His choice of watch to repair is not based on its value but rather on the type of watch that can help cover his rent and household necessities.
The price for his watch repairs varies, with an ordinary one costing around P150. However, the watches that require more intricate repairs bring in additional income, allowing him to meet his financial obligations for rent, utilities, and other household needs.
“Plangga ko ubra ko sir, amo mana nga nagdugay ko sa pagpangay-o kag pangamoyo gid e nga maayo lang lawas,” Tatay Joli said.
(I love what I do, sir. That’s why I’ve been in this watch repair business for a long time. It keeps me active and healthy)
