Fr. Teresito “Chito” Soganub, a Catholic priest who was taken as a hostage by the Maute group in 2017 during the Battle of Marawi, passed away at the age of 59 due to cardiac arrest.
Bishop Edwin Dela Peña of Marawi said in a report via CBCP that the interfaith dialogue martyr died in his sleep at his residence in Noralah, South Cotabato.
According to the doctors, the priest succumbed to cardiac arrest at around 5 to 6 am today, July 22.
“It is with sadness that we make this announcement in behalf of the Prelature of Marawi,” said Bishop Dela Peña. “Please include him in your prayers.”
During the Marawi siege three years ago, Fr. Chito Soganub was captured by the members of the Maute Group, an ISIS-affiliated terrorist group that rage war in Marawi.
Fr. Chito Soganub was rescued by the military force after they penetrated the Bato Mosque, which is considered as the stronghold of the enemies at the time.
But before the Marawi siege, Fr. Chito Soganub was the right hand of the Marawi bishop or known as the vicar general and was one of the 9 priests who dedicated themselves to serve the Prelature of Marawi.
