NMMC, CHO, DOH-10 Discourage Public From Doing ‘Tuob’ As Preventive Measure vs COVID-19

NMMC, CHO, and DOH-10 discouraged the public from doing “tuob” as a preventive measure against COVID-19.

Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC), the City Health Office (CHO) in Cagayan de Oro, and the Department of Health Regional Office 10 (DOH-10) discouraged the public from doing “tuob” or traditional steam inhalation as a preventive measure against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

This, after a 34-year-old woman from Barangay Carmen in Cagayan de Oro was declared dead on arrival last June 7 at Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC).

According to Northern Mindanao Medical Center liaison officer Dr. Bernard Julius Rocha, the said patient had complaints on vomiting and abdominal pain days prior to her admission, adding that a 34-year-old woman relied on “tuob” as her home remedy and didn’t seek medical consultation.

In a report on ABS-CBN News, the said patient was later tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), adding that a 34-year-old woman was the “15th case” in Cagayan de Oro and was reported as the “9th fatality” in Northern Mindanao.

As per the report, four members of her family had tested positive for COVID-19 and remained in Cagayan de Oro’s isolation facilities.

Northern Mindanao Medical Center liaison officer Dr. Bernard Julius Rocha also said that “tuob” can never cure nor prevent coronavirus disease.

Other Stories

Dr. Joselito Retuya, an epidemiologist of the City Health Office in Cagayan de Oro, said that steam inhalation or “tuob” could only offer “temporary relief” from discomfort that brought about by common illnesses including nasal congestions.

Retuya, however, added that there’s no scientific evidence that “tuob” could prevent virus infection or kill viruses.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ian Gonzales, the head of infectious diseases cluster at the Department of Health Regional Office 10 (DOH-10), said that the most effective way in order to prevent COVID-19 was to practice basic health protocols including physical distancing, regular hand washing, wearing of face mask, and to stay at home.

Moreover, health officials in Cagayan de Oro also advised the public to look for an early medical consultation. The City Health Office and Northern Mindanao Medical Center both offered telephone and online consultations so that residents in the city do not need to proceed to clinics and hospitals if they need medical assistance.
