Here’s the comment of Jay Sonza on the national costume of Miss Universe Philippines Celeste Cortesi
JAY SONZA – The veteran journalist criticized the ‘Darna’ national costume of Miss Universe Philippines Celeste Cortesi.
Cortesi is representing the country in the most prestigious beauty pageant in the universe. She recently wowed the crowed in the preliminary round sporting a Darna-inspired national costume.
Her performance at the Miss Universe 2022 prelims earned praises from the netizens. However, there were some who gave a negative comment with regard to her outfit. Among those is veteran journalist Jay Sonza.
On the social networking site, Facebook, he questioned whether the fictional character’s exposing attire was now regarded as “national costume.” He wrote: “Parang hindi yata ako na-inform na ‘national costume’ na ang salawal, salong-dibdib at korona ni Darna. Pilipinas, Mabuhay!”
There were netizens who agreed with the point of view of Sonza. A netizen said: “They’re confusing Cosplay with costume.” Cortesi was defended by other internet users from the journalist by pointing out that Darna is already a part of Filipino culture.
“Part sya sir ng pop culture of a modern Filipina, aminin natin Darna is the embodiment of power, strength and beauty of a filipina – i think okay lang, nasa kultura na rin naman natin si Darna,” a netizen remarked.
Meanwhile, the coronation night of the 71st edition of Miss Universe will be held at Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA this coming January 14, 2023 (January 15, 2023 in the Philippines). 84 candidates around the world are vying for the highly coveted crown.
