Louis Vuitton, a luxury French fashion house that was known for its leather handbags, bought the world’s second-biggest diamond in history.
According to several reports, Louis Vuitton recently purchased the 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond, which was recorded as the world’s second-largest diamond ever found in history.
Bloomberg reported that Lucara Diamond Corp. found this diamond at the Karowe mine in Botswana. The said diamond was named Sewelo — which means “rare find” in Tswana (one of the languages spoken in Botswana).
Michael Burke, the chief executive of Louis Vuitton, said in an interview with The New York Times that the purchase price for the 1,758-carat Sewelo diamond was in the “millions” and acknowledged that some of its competitors will be surprised by the news.
Burke also said in an interview with Financial Times that he sought a lot of “biggest potential” for his company in the market.
The 3,106-carat Cullinan diamond was recorded as the world’s largest diamond in history. This diamond was found in South Africa way back in 1905.
The Cullinan diamond was famously cut into several gems and the largest of which were now part of the British crown jewels.
