Johnny Manahan Reveals Real Reason Behind Exit from GMA-7

Johnny Manahan Explains Why He Left GMA-7 After 3-Year Contract

Johnny Manahan, also known as “Mr. M,” has finally shared the reason behind his departure from GMA-7 after years of speculation. This came out during the launch of Star Worx, formerly MediaQuest Artist Agency, where he now serves as head of talent management under TV5.

He explained that he had a three-year contract with GMA-7 and was generally treated well by the network and its executives. He said he worked closely with key figures in the company and maintained good professional relationships. However, after his contract ended, the network decided to continue without him, believing they could manage talent development on their own. He added that they also likely wanted to see what more he could contribute beyond what they already had internally.

Manahan clarified that there was no conflict, only a natural end to the working arrangement. He also made light of the situation by joking that people never asked him the same question when he previously moved from another major network.

Now with TV5, he expressed confidence that traditional television is still relevant in discovering and developing stars, despite the rise of social media. He acknowledged that online platforms can create quick fame, but he believes television remains important in building long-term careers and meaningful storytelling. He compared social media fame to short bursts of attention, while emphasizing that TV allows deeper and more lasting audience connection.

He also highlighted the goal of producing new types of shows, including drama, comedy, and possibly horror, to keep audiences engaged. He noted that classic Filipino comedy still resonates today and could make a strong comeback.

As part of Star Worx’s first group, 16 young talents were introduced, consisting of seven male and nine female artists. Manahan said they were chosen based on “X-factor,” potential, and youth, with the goal of developing them over time, similar to how past stars grew into major names in the industry.

He added that some of them will receive individual projects, while others may appear in group shows, including a planned horror-drama series.
