Manananggal Doll Launched by Mattel

Mattel Launches Manananggal Doll

MANANANGGAL DOLL – Mattel has introduced a new Monster High doll inspired by the Philippine mythical creature. Named Corazon Marikit, this unique doll blends elements of Filipino folklore and fashion, exciting many fans, especially in the Philippines.

Corazon Marikit wears a modernized version of traditional Filipino clothing, including a baro (blouse) and a long skirt with red fringes designed to resemble dripping blood. She accessorizes with a fan, a spider web-patterned bag, and wooden clogs (bakya). However, what truly sets her apart is her ability to detach her upper body from her lower half, mirroring the manananggal’s terrifying ability to split in two and fly into the night. She also features large, embroidered bat-like wings and vampire-like fangs, staying true to the essence of the folklore.

The manananggal is one of the most feared creatures in Philippine mythology. According to legend, this supernatural being appears as a beautiful woman during the day but transforms at night, growing wings and separating her torso to hunt for pregnant women. Using her long, thin tongue, she feeds on the hearts of unborn children, a terrifying tale passed down to warn against vanity and the desire for eternal youth.

Despite its dark origins, Mattel has reimagined the manananggal in a more fashionable and empowering light. Corazon Marikit is described as a “fashion maven” who brings Filipino heritage to life. Her release has been met with enthusiasm, with many Filipinos expressing joy over this representation in the Monster High series. Fans have praised the doll’s intricate design, which highlights Filipino culture through its detailed clothing and accessories.

Corazon Marikit joins other Asian-inspired Monster High characters, such as Jinafire Long from China and Kiyomi Haunterly from Japan. This isn’t Mattel’s first Filipino-inspired doll either—previous releases include the Mutya Barbie (2015) and the Filipina Barbie (2024), both designed by Filipino-American artist Carlyle Nuera.
