Kian delos Santos’ Uncle Reacts to Duterte’s Arrest

Uncle of Kian delos Santos Speaks on Duterte’s Arrest

RANDY DELOS SANTOS – The uncle of Kian delos Santos expressed his thoughts on former President Rodrigo Duterte’s recent arrest, calling him “fortunate” for receiving due process—something many victims of the drug war, including his nephew, were allegedly denied.

Kian, a 17-year-old student, was killed during a police operation in Caloocan City in August 2017. His death became one of the most well-known cases linked to Duterte’s war on drugs. Security footage later revealed that the teenager had not resisted arrest, contrary to police claims. Instead, the video showed officers dragging him into an alley before fatally shooting him. A court eventually found three police officers guilty of murder for their involvement in Kian’s killing.

Speaking to reporters, Randy pointed out the stark contrast between Duterte’s arrest and the treatment of drug war victims. “Mapalad dating pangulo…ang aking pamangkin hindi dinala sa korte,” he said, emphasizing that many, like Kian, never had that opportunity.

Randy recalled how his nephew was accused without being given a chance to prove his innocence. “Ang aking pamangkin ay hindi na dinala sa korte. Ang daming akusasyon na ibinato. Tapos pinatay ,” he said.

Duterte is currently facing charges of crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his administration’s violent anti-drug campaign. His arrest, facilitated by Interpol, marks a significant moment for the families of those who lost loved ones during the drug war.

For Randy and other affected families, Duterte’s detention represents more than just legal accountability—it is a step toward long-awaited justice. “Hinintay ito ng pamilya. Hindi lang ito para sa amin, para rin ito sa mga pamilya na naging biktima,” he said.

While Duterte’s supporters claim the arrest is politically motivated, his critics, including families like Kian’s, view it as a long-overdue reckoning for the thousands who never had the chance to defend themselves in court.
