VP Sara Duterte Breaks Silence on Impeachment

VP Sara Duterte Reacts to Her Impeachment

SARA DUTERTE – The Vice President of the Republic of the Philippines has spoken out following her impeachment by the House of Representatives on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

In a press briefing on Friday, February 7, Duterte addressed the public and the media, responding to requests for her reaction regarding the impeachment proceedings. “Ang tanging masasabi ko na lamang sa puntong ito ay God save the Philippines,’” she stated briefly.

Despite the political turmoil, Duterte expressed gratitude to her supporters, thanking those who continue to stand by her. “Manalig kayo dahil sa taumbayan ang tagumpay,” she added.

Duterte’s impeachment was formalized after 215 lawmakers signed the fourth impeachment complaint against her. On Thursday, February 6, ACT Teachers Party-list Representative France Castro clarified that not all lawmakers present at the plenary session on February 5 signed the complaint. “Hindi totoo na may mga pilitan. In fact, may mga dumalo nga doon na hindi pumirma. Wala naman pumilit sa kanila,” Castro asserted.

Among the 215 legislators who supported the impeachment, Ilocos Norte 1st District Representative Sandro Marcos, son of President Bongbong Marcos Jr., was reportedly the first to sign the complaint against Duterte. President Marcos later confirmed that his son had consulted him regarding the matter.

Meanwhile, if the Vice President of the Philippines is impeached, the case proceeds to the Senate for trial. If convicted, the VP is removed from office, disqualified from holding any future government position, and stripped of official benefits. Depending on the charges, they may also face legal consequences. However, if acquitted, the VP remains in office but may suffer political damage, affecting their credibility and future political ambitions. Regardless of the outcome, impeachment weakens the VP’s influence and can impact their ability to govern effectively.
