Vice Pres. Sara Duterte Gives Last Speech as DepEd Secretary

SARA DUTERTE – The Vice President officially turned over her position as the DepEd Secretary to Senator Sonny Angara.

One of the most crucial roles is being the secretary of the Department of Education. It brings a huge challenge to lead the elementary and secondary education in the entire country. In 2022, President Bongbong Marcos appointed Vice Pres. Sara Duterte-Carpio to be its chief.

Vice Pres. Duterte did not cite the reason why she resigned from leading the Department of Education. According to her, her decision is out of compassion to the students and the teachers. Her resignation was accepted by Pres. Marcos.

In a short time since Duterte announced her resignation, Marcos appointed Sen. Sonny Angara to replace her as the secretary of the Department of Education. Recently, a turn-over ceremony was held to pass on the DepEd leadership from the Vice President to the Senator.

Before the turn-over ceremony, Vice Pres. Sara Duterte toured Sen. Sonny Angara at the DepEd Complex in Pasig City based on a report on GMA News. It was where the turn-over ceremony was held. She turned over the seal and the flag of the education department to Angara.

In her last speech as the DepEd secretary, Duterte mentioned the programs that were launched under her two-year term in the education field. The now-former DepEd Chief cited the Matatag agenda, the launching of the National Learning Recovery Plan, the K to 10 Matatag Curriculum, the return of in-person classes for 27 million learners, and the review of the Senior High School curriculum.

Vice Pres. Sara Duterte admitted that some of the programs that were launched during her two-year tenure as the DepEd secretary are unfinished. Meanwhile, the Vice President confidently leaves it in the hands of the next secretary of the department. She urged to give the same warm welcome to the new education chief like how she was welcomed by the department.

“We would like to warmly welcome Secretary Sonny Angara to the Department of Education family. Welcome to the chaos, Sec.,” the Vice President jested.

At the turn-over ceremony, new DepEd Sec. Sonny Angara gave his first speech as the new chief of the Department of Education. Based on the article, he expressed his acceptance of the position and assured that he will do everything to get the changes and the reform that is based on the pursuit of “Bagong Pilipinas”.

Furthermore, Angara also acknowledged the efforts of Vice Pres. Duterte and the other outgoing officials in their service to DepEd for two years. Aside from the Vice President, 5 high-ranking officials of DepEd also resigned from their posts. They are:

  • Undersecretary Michael Poa
  • Undersecretary for Administration Nolasco Mempin
  • Assistant Secretary Sunshine Fajarda
  • Assistant Secretary for Procurement Reynold Munsayac
