Bongbong Marcos Won’t Fire VP Sara As Education Chief

VP Sara Duterte-Carpio To Stay As DepEd Chief Says President Bongbong Marcos

BONGBONG MARCOS – President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. said Vice President Sara Duterte will stay as Department of Education (DepEd) chief.

On Tuesday, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed that Vice President Sara Duterte will retain her position as Secretary of Education despite calls for her resignation.

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives have expressed doubts about Duterte’s competence in overseeing the education system.

Based on a report from Inquirer, when asked about ensuring Duterte’s ongoing tenure, President Bongbong Marcos stated that it hinged on their individual performance in their roles.

“Any of the cabinet secretaries will be replaced kapag hindi nila ginagawa yung trabaho nila. All the other things are not part of the discussion. Kapag hindi na kaya, nagkasakit, sabihin mo lang, papalitan ka namin. Kapag hindi talaga marunong o korap, tatanggalin ka talaga namin. Hindi naman ganoon si Inday,” said Marcos in an ambush interview in Occidental Mindoro.

Lawmakers called for Sara Duterte’s resignation for diverse reasons. Some cited concerns over her limited experience in education, while others highlighted the continuous stream of criticisms from the Duterte family aimed at Marcos.

“The Vice President should show some decency by resigning from her DepEd post at the very least. Her family unleashed a barrage of insults and attacks directly to the President and yet she does nothing and is still enjoying the perks of being part of the official family,” Manila 3rd District Representative Joel Chua said in a statement on April 19.

In a January rally, ex-president Rodrigo Duterte publicly called Marcos “bangag,” a colloquial term for a drug user. Sara Duterte was in attendance and was filmed appearing to ‘laugh’ during her father’s speech, eliciting disapproval from First Lady Liza Marcos.

Meanwhile, ACT Teachers Representative France Castro emphasized the need for a better-suited candidate to serve as Education Secretary.

“If he were to replace his secretary, then he should get someone he should have gotten in the first place: someone who knows education and whose decisions actually better the sector,” Castro said.
