Official statement of FL Liza Marcos on viral video with Senate President Chiz Escudero

LIZA MARCOS – The First Lady issued a statement addressing the viral video of her taking and drinking from Senate President Chiz Escudero’s wine glass. The incident occurred during the Vin d’Honneur event at Malacañang on June 12, in line with the celebration of Independence Day.

In the video, President Ferdinand Marcos is seen mingling with guests, including Senator Chiz and House Speaker Martin Romualdez. As the President engaged in conversation, the First Lady took Senator Escudero’s glass, drank from it, and then returned it, prompting the Senator to laugh.

In a DZRH News interview on June 14, FL Liza explained that the video captured a light-hearted moment between her and Escudero. She detailed that after greeting numerous ambassadors and international representatives for over an hour, she and the President entered the ceremonial hall. They joined Escudero and Romualdez, where Escudero remarked on her energy after the lengthy greeting session and suggested she could use a drink.

Laughing, FL Liza took his champagne glass, took a sip, and jokingly commented on the temperature of the drink, saying, “Eeew, hindi naman malamig ang champagne niyo.” She then returned the glass to Escudero, and they both laughed at the playful exchange, which lasted about ten seconds.

FL Liza also reminisced about her long-standing friendship with Escudero, dating back to their law school days when he studied at the University of the Philippines and she attended Ateneo de Manila University. She emphasized that their camaraderie has been strong since then, and their playful interactions reflect this bond.

Senator Escudero had previously commented on the viral video, expressing his view that attending to a lady, whether the First Lady or otherwise, is an act of gentlemanliness. He acknowledged that some might see it as old-fashioned or submissive, but he firmly believes that treating others with respect and kindness is timeless and will never go out of style.
