Suspect in Cash-in Scam Returns Stolen Money to Victims After Feeling Guilty

Feeling guilty, a suspect in a cash-in scam returned the stolen money to the victims

PANGASINAN – The suspect implicated in a cash-in scheme has returned the money to the victims after feeling guilty.

On March 13, GMA reported an incident of the scheme in Barangay Nalsian Norte, Malasiqui, Pangasinan. Two days later, the affected business owners were surprised when the person who took the money contacted them, saying sorry and returning the stolen P35,000.

One victim said the suspect was under financial pressure, which made the perpetrator do the scam. This apology wasn’t just for one victim. The suspect also returned money taken from another person in Alcala. The victims are now being more careful with their online transactions, with one saying they now require upfront payment because they have been let down before.

“Mas maingat [na ngayon], dati naman talaga payment first ang policy namin. Noong oras na iyon at ‘yung customer na ‘yun, biglang nabago ang patakaran. Dahil mayaman siya, nagtiwala ‘yung kasama ko,” said a victim.

Despite what happened, the victims decided not to take legal action. The Pangasinan Police Provincial Office advises people to be careful, especially because there are a lot of online scams in the area. PCPT. Renan Dela Cruz, the Public Information Officer, says it’s important to question online transactions and not trust them right away.

Meanwhile, cash-in scams involve different dishonest tricks to get people to send money to scammers. These scams use lies to make people believe they’ll get something good in return. Examples include fake investment offers, lottery scams asking for fees to get prizes, romance scams where fake online people ask for money, and work-at-home scams asking for upfront fees. Tech support scams make people pay for services they don’t need, while emergency scams pretend to be friends or family in trouble. These scams take advantage of people’s trust and weaknesses, so it’s important to be careful to avoid falling for them.
