Netizens Notice Similarities Between Shaira’s “Forever Single” and Indonesian Song

“Forever Single” by Shaira vs Indonesian song “Masih Mencintainya”

SHAIRA MORO – The “Queen of Bangsamoro pop” might face another copyright problem concerning her song ‘Forever Single.’

Many X users observed similarities between Shaira’s popular song and the Indonesian band Papinka’s track, “Masih Mencintainya.” Critics pointed out that the composer of “Forever Single” failed to seek permission before incorporating elements from the Papinka song.

Additionally, some critics found fault with the lyrics, suggesting they perpetuated negative stereotypes about unmarried individuals in their late 20s. Despite this, some fans defended Shaira, noting that her local fanbase in the Bangsamoro region might interpret the song differently due to cultural nuances.

The “Queen of Bangsamoro Pop” quickly rose to prominence after her song “Selos” was streamed across various social media platforms, reaching number 1 on Spotify Viral Song PH on March 8.

However, controversy ensued as many noticed similarities between “Selos” and “Trouble Is A Friend” by Australian singer-songwriter Lenka. Lenka responded to a netizen’s Instagram post, acknowledging the situation and confirming action taken.

In an official statement released by Shaira’s record label on Tuesday night, March 19, they confirmed that the melody of “Selos” was indeed inspired by “Trouble Is A Friend.” Despite divided opinions among netizens, with some suggesting gratitude from Lenka and others emphasizing the importance of addressing copyright issues, Shaira’s record label is working to resolve the matter with Lenka.

Aside from “Selos” and “Forever Single,” some of Shaira’s other singles include “Pakboy,” “Machine Gun,” and “Ikaw Lamang (BabyCakes Ko).” “Pakboy” critiques men who seem to pursue every woman they encounter and addresses the issue of men exploiting opportunities to convert to Islam just to have multiple wives. “Machine Gun” breaks societal stereotypes about women being too outspoken, highlighting that not all women fit into society’s predefined roles. “Ikaw Lamang (BabyCakes Ko)” portrays the heartache of someone left by their loved one, despite the lively tune, with lyrics filled with sadness and longing.
