DENR Issues Official Statement on Captain’s Peak Resort in Chocolate Hills

Here’s the official statement from DENR regarding Captain’s Peak Resort in Chocolate Hills

CHOCOLATE HILLS ISSUE – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has issued an official statement regarding Captain’s Peak Resort.

According to DENR, the Chocolate Hills in Bohol, Philippines, were designated as a protected area on July 1, 1997, through Proclamation No. 1037 by former President Fidel V. Ramos. This declaration acknowledged the unique geological formations and aimed to safeguard them for future generations, promoting sustainable tourism while protecting the area’s biodiversity and environment.

While previously titled lands generally retain their rights, the protected status may introduce limitations on land usage and development, even for privately owned lands. These regulations are typically detailed in an Environmental Impact Statement required for obtaining an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) for any projects within the area.

Regarding Captain’s Peak Resort, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) issued a Temporary Closure Order on September 6, 2023, and a Notice of Violation on January 22, 2024, due to operating without an ECC. As of March 13, 2024, Regional Executive Director Paquito D. Melicor instructed the Bohol Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) to inspect Captain’s Peak Resort for compliance with the Temporary Closure Order, while the DENR-Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) will continue monitoring the situation.

As of press time, Captain’s Peak Resort has yet to issue an official statement regarding the controversy, which has been making headlines at the national level. The Captain’s Peak Resort features a rectangular swimming pool equipped with slides, alongside a handful of umbrellas offering shade to visitors. Additionally, cemented steps and various adornments adorn the surroundings.

Meanwhile, Erico Aris Aumentado, the governor of Bohol, stated that the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 7 will issue a cease and desist order against Captain’s Peak Resort.
