Grandma Arrested for Making and Selling Fake Luxury Bags and Wallets

Due to making and selling fake luxury bags and wallets, a grandmother was arrested

JAPAN – A 64-year-old grandmother from Katsushika Ward in Tokyo was arrested for making fake luxury bags and wallets.

She sewed the items using her old sewing machine at her own home. She sold them in her small shop, telling her customers that her products were “original.” The grandmother was not named.

She started this activity several years ago when she opened a small bag shop in Katsushika. At first, she only sold original products, so her reputation back then was truly that of an original bag seller. However, her business did not go very well. It worsened even more during the pandemic.

One time, while she was watching television, she became interested in a segment featuring famous designer bags and accessories. The grandmother decided to follow the trend to make her shop grow.

She did some research and found branded fabric and synthetic leather online. And because she was good at sewing, she made luxury bag knockoffs using her old sewing machine.

In the past two years, the grandmother estimated she earned over 900,000 yen or PHP 336,987 from selling fake Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Gucci bags, as well as accessories in her small shop. According to PEP.ph, police raided her shop after someone complained about her selling fake branded products. The police confiscated more than 330 counterfeit items, as well as rolls of branded fabric and fake leather.

After her arrest, the grandmother admitted to making fake bags and wallets. Some of her creations were exact copies of expensive bags and wallets. Others, she said, were her original designs using materials and logos of famous brands to attract customers.
