Indian actor Sajid Khan dies
SAJID KHAN – The Indian actor known for his significant role in the Philippine film industry during the 1970s, passed away on December 22, 2023, at the age of 71.
Sajid gained popularity in the Philippines after starring alongside Superstar Nora Aunor in the blockbuster movie “The Singing Filipina,” released on February 1, 1971.
Sajid’s son, Sameer, confirmed his father’s demise, attributing it to a prolonged battle with cancer. Sajid’s passing occurred six days before his 72nd birthday on December 28, 2023. In an official statement, Sameer described Sajid as a luminary of Indian cinema, emphasizing his compelling performances and timeless contributions to the entertainment industry.
Originally recognized as a matinee idol in America in 1967 for his participation in the NBC television series “Maya,” Sajid’s popularity in Hollywood paved the way for his showbiz career in the Philippines. He endeared himself to Filipino fans, particularly through his pairing with Nora Aunor in “The Singing Filipina.”
In addition to his collaboration with Aunor, Sajid starred in Filipino films such as “My Funny Girl” and “The Prince and I,” both released in 1971. His acting career flourished from 1966 to 1974. His last film, “Heat and Dust,” was released in 1983.
Despite the passage of time and geographical separation, Nora Aunor and Sajid Khan reconnected when Nora chose to live in America for an extended period. In a March 2015 interview, Nora revealed that she had served as Sajid’s caregiver without expecting anything in return. The actress expressed her compassion for the Indian actor, her former on-screen partner, emphasizing their bond from their younger years.
Sajid Khan’s contribution to Philippine cinema and his enduring connection with Nora Aunor remain significant aspects of his legacy. The news of his passing has left fans and the entertainment industry mourning the loss of a talent that transcended borders and cultures.
